Please review the below information on the Common Application
Important School Forms Information
In response to recent questions, we are sending this special message to remind all counselors and teachers using the Online School Forms System, including those submitting forms through Naviance, that a Common App member institution will not receive your forms unless the student has submitted a Common App Online for that college or university. If your student uses the paper version of the Common App, an institutional application, or a pre-populated online application, you must mail your school forms to the college.
Of these alternate applications, the pre-populated online versions appear to be causing the greatest degree of confusion. Currently, 67 of our 391 member institutions employ some sort of pre-populated application--more than a 100% increase from just two years ago. This increase has also coincided with an explosion in the number of counselors and teachers submitting school forms online. (When the 2008-2009 cycle ended, school officials had submitted over 1.2 million school forms, and we are already running 90% ahead of last year.) The result is more counselors and teachers submitting on behalf of more students who are opting not to use the Common App Online, and some school officials are understandably frustrated by the inability of colleges to access school forms submitted online. Through our monthly email updates and the School Forms instructions, we have tried to reinforce with both counselors and members that it is the act of the student's submitting the application through our system that enables supporting documents to be matched to the student record and delivered to the college. Absent a student application in our system, we have no way to deliver the forms to the college.
The question that invariably follows is, "Why not?" In response, some historical context is helpful. In our pilot year of operation (2007-2008), school forms were not tied to submitted applications as they are now. As a result, any college appearing on a student's "My Colleges" list had the ability to download school forms independent of the application. After a year of following that process, the overwhelming feedback from members, counselors, and students was that it needed to change for the following reasons:
1. Members were receiving a significant number of school forms that did not ultimately have accompanying applications, which strained staff and financial resources.
2. Students were receiving "missing items" emails from colleges to which they had never applied.
3. Counselors were frustrated because confused students and angry parents wanted to know why their counselors had "sent" school forms without request or consent to colleges where students had never filed an application.
The solution was to tie the school forms to the application itself, which has caused confusion among some counselors whose students have not kept them apprised of their application plans. We are sympathetic to counselors in the current dilemma, and we are continuing to explore strategies for making the process as easy and transparent as possible. In the meanwhile, we encourage you to communicate this important information to your students so you can submit their school forms in a timely manner using the appropriate submission method.

Interested in Studying Architecture. Mark Robbins, Dean of Syracuse
University's School of Architecture is desperately seeking young men and
women of color interested in pursuing a five year professional degree in
Architecture. He says he's deeply committed to bringing diversity to his
field and has scholarship money set aside to fully cover education costs
for 10 students. He says that Hispanic enrollment in the school has
increased substantially, but it's been harder to attract Blacks. Syracuse
University School of Architecture has a great reputation and this seems
like a terrific opportunity, so please pass this on to everyone you know.
